I still remember my eighth grade music teacher playing "Take Five" for us. I thought that it was a really cool tune. He also played Ravel's "Bolero. Gave me an appreciation for Jazz and more classical things.............
I never heard Take Five until I heard the song on a car commercial. It took me forever to find what it was. Some music nerd I was. When I did find out what it was it was way before the computer age. I had to go to the library and get an album to hear it again. I also read some background on it. Seems that Paul Desmond had the tune in his head, and played it for Brubeck. Dave had never heard anything quite like it and the rest, of course, is history. Don't quote me on that, as my memories sometimes get mixed up between stories, but I am pretty sure that is right.
